What is the passive voice?

In the active sentence the subject performs the action. In the passive sentence the subject receives the action. It is very frequent in formal texts, news, instructions and documents.

Il progetto è approvato dal Comune.

Il libro è stato pubblicato dall'editore.

Agreement: the participle agrees with the passive subject: la lettera è stata scritta, i documenti sono stati firmati.

Le richieste sono state analizzate con attenzione.

Common mistakes

Wrong: la lettera è scritto Correct: la lettera è scritta.
Wrong: il libro è pubblicato da ieri Better: il libro è stato pubblicato ieri.
Wrong: viene chiuso da me la porta Correct: la porta viene chiusa da me.
Wrong: il modulo deve compilato Correct: il modulo va compilato / deve essere compilato.
