Preposition + article = one word

When di, a, da, in or su is followed by a definite article, the two words merge into one: di + il = del. In English it is like “of the” becoming a single word.

dideldellodell’delladeideglidelle
aalalloall’allaaiaglialle
dadaldallodall’dalladaidaglidalle

di + il → del
Il libro del professore.
a + la → alla
Vado alla stazione.
da + lo → dallo
Torno dallo stadio.
in + l’ → nell’
Il cappotto è nell’armadio.
su + i → sui
Le foto sono sui muri.
a + gli → agli
Scrivo agli amici.

Two things to remember. Di becomes de- and in becomes ne-: del, nel. And with lo, la, l’, gli, le the l doubles: dello, alla, negli.

Con, per, tra and fra do not merge: con il, per la, tra gli. You sometimes hear col (con + il), but it is never required.

When do you need the article?

You only need an articulated preposition when the noun takes an article. Compare the pairs: on the left the noun has no article, on the right it does.

City / place with an article
Vado a Roma. · Vado al mare.
Country / country with an adjective
Vivo in Italia. · Vivo nell’Italia del Sud.
Name / profession
Vado da Marco. · Vado dal medico.
Family / friends
Il libro di mia sorella. · Il libro della mia amica.
Telling the time
alle otto, all’una, dalle nove alle cinque
Fixed places
al bar, al cinema, allo stadio · in centro, in città

Cities and people’s names have no article, so the preposition stays simple: a Roma, da Anna. Common nouns do: al mare, dal medico, alla stazione.

Watch out for fixed places: al bar, al cinema, al supermercato, but in centro, in città, in cucina, a casa, without the article. Learn them in groups.

Del pane, dei libri: an unspecified amount

Di + article also means “some”: this is the partitive. You hear it all the time at the café, at the market and in restaurants.

Some (uncountable): del, della, dello
Vorrei del pane, per favore.
Some (plural): dei, degli, delle
Ho comprato dei pomodori e delle mele.
In negative sentences: nothing
Non ho pane. · Ho un po’ di pane.

Dei, degli, delle are the plural of un, uno, una: un libro → dei libri, uno zaino → degli zaini, una mela → delle mele.
