Vocabulary A2–B1
Observe the scene and discover each word through the image and three example Italian sentences.

The verbs are in order: from the strongest push to do something (costringere), through working together (collaborare), to the strongest stop (proibire). At the end come the verbs for acting behind someone’s back and for responding.

These verbs are often followed by another verb in the infinitive, and the little word in between changes. With incoraggiare, convincere, obbligare, motivare and coinvolgere you say qualcuno a fare: ho convinto Marco a venire (I convinced Marco to come), that is l’ho convinto a venire (I convinced him to come). With consigliare, sconsigliare, permettere and vietare you say a qualcuno di fare: ho consigliato a Marco di partire (I advised Marco to leave), that is gli ho consigliato di partire (I advised him to leave). Impedire always takes di: la pioggia ci ha impedito di uscire (the rain stopped us from going out). Dare retta takes a: dai retta a tua madre (listen to your mother), dalle retta (listen to her). Opporsi and mettersi d’accordo are reflexive and take essere in the passato prossimo: mi sono opposta (I objected, said by a woman), ci siamo messi d’accordo (we agreed). Careful: l’influenza is also the winter illness, the flu (ho l’influenza: I have the flu). More verbs for dealing with other people are in the lesson Relationship verbs.
Drag-and-drop exercise
Drag a verb onto the photo it describes. Sometimes several verbs fit (a dad running beside his daughter on her bike is encouraging her, but he is also motivating and supporting her: motivare, sostenere): one is enough, but you can add as many as you like. On a phone: tap the verb, then tap the photo.

Verbs: drag them onto the photos or tap them
