If the main verb is in the past or conditional, the subjunctive often changes to the imperfect.

Unreal wish
Mi piacerebbe che parlassimo più spesso.

Attention: after "se" in the hypothesis we do not use the conditional: if I were, if I had, if I could.

Wrong: se sarei.Corretto: se fossi.

Wrong: volevo che vieni.Corretto: volevo che venissi.

Wrong: pensavo che era.Corretto: pensavo che fosse.

Wrong: vorrei che parli.Corretto: vorrei che parlassi.
