How to form it: stare + gerund

Use the verb stare in the present and the gerund of the main verb (the Italian “-ing” form). Stare changes with the person; the gerund never changes.

PersonstareExample
iostoSto parlando al telefono.
tustaiStai leggendo un libro?
lui / leistaIl bambino sta dormendo.
noistiamoStiamo mangiando.
voistateState scrivendo un’email?
lorostannoStanno lavorando.
InfinitiveGerundExample
parlare (-are)parlando (-ando)Sto parlando con Anna.
leggere (-ere)leggendo (-endo)Sto leggendo il giornale.
dormire (-ire)dormendo (-endo)Sto dormendo poco.
finire (-isc-)finendo (-endo)Sto finendo i compiti.

Verbs in -ere and -ire share the same ending: -endo. Verbs like finire and capire also drop -isc-: finendo, capendo.

Where do the pronouns go? Before stare or attached to the gerund: lo sto facendo = sto facendolo (I am doing it), mi sto lavando = sto lavandomi (I am washing). The first form is much more common.

Irregular gerunds

There are only a few irregular gerunds, but they are very common verbs.

InfinitiveGerundExample
fare (facevo)facendoSto facendo la doccia.
dire (dicevo)dicendoChe cosa stai dicendo?
bere (bevevo)bevendoSto bevendo un caffè.
tradurre (traducevo)traducendoSto traducendo una lettera.
porre (ponevo)ponendoTi sto ponendo una domanda.

The imperfect trick. An irregular gerund is built like the imperfect: facevo → facendo, dicevo → dicendo, bevevo → bevendo, traducevo → traducendo. If you know the imperfect, you already know the gerund.

When to use it (and when not to)

Stare + gerund says that an action is in progress right at this moment. But Italian uses it much less than English: very often the simple present is enough.

Right now
Non posso rispondere: sto guidando.
On the phone
Che cosa stai facendo? Sto cucinando.
A current period
In questi mesi sto studiando il tedesco.
The present is often enough
Che fai stasera? Esco con Anna.
Habits: the present
Lavoro in banca da dieci anni.
Future plans: the present
Domani parto per Roma.

Never for the future. In English you say “I’m leaving tomorrow”; in Italian you say domani parto, not domani sto partendo.

State verbs stay in the present: so (I know), voglio (I want), mi piace (I like it), sono, ho. You never say sto sapendo or sto essendo.

In the past: stavo + gerund

With stare in the imperfect you describe an action in progress in the past, often interrupted by another one in the passato prossimo, like the English past continuous.

PersonstareExample
iostavoStavo dormendo.
tustaviStavi uscendo?
lui / leistavaStava piovendo.
noistavamoStavamo cenando.
voistavateStavate guardando la TV?
lorostavanoStavano parlando di te.
An interrupted action
Stavo dormendo quando è suonato il telefono.
With mentre (while)
Mentre stavamo cenando, è andata via la luce.
What the weather was doing
Quando sono uscito stava piovendo.

Stavo dormendo or dormivo? Both are correct: dormivo quando è suonato il telefono. With stavo + gerund the action feels more vivid, as if we were watching it happen.

Stare per + infinitive: sto per uscire

Don’t mix them up: stare per + infinitive means that an action is about to start, like “to be about to”.

In a moment
Sto per uscire: ti chiamo dopo.
In the past
Stavo per addormentarmi quando sei arrivato.
A danger
Attento, il bicchiere sta per cadere!
The difference
Sto uscendo adesso. Sto per uscire tra un minuto.

Sto uscendo or sto per uscire? Sto uscendo: I am already at the door. Sto per uscire: I am about to go out, but I am still at home.
