From 100% to 0%: the scale

Adverbs of frequency say how often we do something. Here they are in order, from the one that means every time to the one that means no time at all.

AdverbTranslationFrequencyExample
semprealways100%Faccio sempre colazione.
quasi semprealmost always90%Vado quasi sempre al lavoro a piedi.
di solito / solitamenteusually80%Di solito ceno alle otto.
spessooften70%Vado spesso al cinema.
a volte / qualche voltasometimes50%A volte cucino io.
ogni tantonow and then30%Ogni tanto chiamo mia nonna.
raramente / di radorarely, seldom15%Prendo raramente il taxi.
molto raramentevery rarely10%Vado molto raramente in discoteca.
quasi maihardly ever5%Non guardo quasi mai la televisione.
mainever0%Non fumo mai.

The percentages are only a guide. They help you remember the order: no Italian thinks “spesso = 70%”. Between neighbours (di solito and spesso, a volte and ogni tanto) the difference is small and depends on the speaker.

Words with the same value. Di solito = solitamente = normalmente. Spesso = frequentemente, more formal. A volte = qualche volta. Raramente = di rado.

Where the adverb goes

The adverb usually goes straight after the verb. Di solito, a volte, qualche volta and ogni tanto can also go at the start or at the end of the sentence.

After the verb
Vado spesso al cinema.
At the start
Di solito ceno alle otto.
At the end
Ci vediamo ogni tanto.
With a reflexive verb
Mi alzo sempre alle sette.
With essere
Marco è sempre allegro.
In the passato prossimo
Ho sempre abitato a Milano.

In the passato prossimo sempre, spesso and mai usually go between the auxiliary and the participle: ho sempre detto (I have always said), non sono mai stato (I have never been). Adverbs made of several words sound better at the start or at the end: ci siamo visti ogni tanto (we saw each other now and then).

Non… mai: the double negative

With mai and quasi mai Italian uses two negatives: non before the verb and mai after it. It is not a mistake: it is compulsory.

Mai: 0%
Non fumo mai.
Quasi mai: 5%
Non esco quasi mai la sera.
In the passato prossimo
Non sono mai stato in Sicilia.
In questions: ever, once in your life
Sei mai stato a Roma?
On its own, as an answer
Bevi il latte? Mai!
Non sempre: sometimes yes, sometimes no
Non sempre ho tempo per cucinare.

Mai at the start of the sentence? Only for emphasis, and then non disappears: Mai visto una cosa così! (Never seen anything like it!) In normal sentences you say non… mai.

Non sempre does not mean never. Non sempre ho ragione means that sometimes I am right and sometimes I am not. For 0% you need mai: non ho mai ragione (I am never right).

How often? Ogni giorno, due volte alla settimana

For an exact frequency use una volta (once), due volte (twice)… with al, alla, all’, or ogni (every) and tutti i / tutte le (all the).

ExpressionExample
Quante volte…?Quante volte alla settimana vai in palestra?
ogni giorno / tutti i giorniBevo un caffè ogni giorno.
una volta al giornoPrendo la medicina una volta al giorno.
due volte alla settimanaVado a nuotare due volte alla settimana.
una volta al meseVado dal parrucchiere una volta al mese.
una volta all’annoVado in vacanza una volta all’anno.
ogni lunedì / il lunedìIl lunedì ho lezione d’italiano.
ogni mattina / tutte le mattineCorro tutte le mattine.

Ogni takes the singular, tutti the plural with the article: ogni giorno = tutti i giorni (every day), ogni settimana = tutte le settimane (every week). Qualche also takes the singular: qualche volta, never qualche volte.

Al, alla, all’ follow the gender of the word: al giorno (a day), al mese (a month), alla settimana (a week), all’anno (a year). In speech you also hear due volte a settimana.
