How to form them: mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si
A reflexive verb has a small pronoun in front of it: mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si, like “myself, yourself…”. The verb itself is conjugated as usual, in the three groups ending in -are, -ere and -ire.
| Person | Pronoun | svegliarsi | mettersi | vestirsi |
|---|
| io | mi | mi sveglio | mi metto | mi vesto |
| tu | ti | ti svegli | ti metti | ti vesti |
| lui / lei | si | si sveglia | si mette | si veste |
| noi | ci | ci svegliamo | ci mettiamo | ci vestiamo |
| voi | vi | vi svegliate | vi mettete | vi vestite |
| loro | si | si svegliano | si mettono | si vestono |
The infinitive ends in -si: svegliarsi = svegliare + si, mettersi, vestirsi. Dictionaries often list the verb without -si.
Si works twice: for lui / lei and for loro. The verb ending tells you which: si sveglia (he/she wakes up), si svegliano (they wake up).
The verbs of the day
Almost the whole daily routine is told with reflexive verbs, even where English uses no “myself”.
Waking up
Mi sveglio alle sette e mi alzo subito.
In the bathroom
Mi lavo la faccia e mi faccio la doccia.
Getting ready
Mi vesto, mi pettino e mi trucco.
During the day
A pranzo mi siedo al bar e mi riposo un po’.
In the evening
La sera mi lavo i denti e mi metto il pigiama.
At night
Mi addormento sempre verso mezzanotte.
No possessive with parts of the body: mi lavo le mani (I wash my hands), mi lavo i denti (I brush my teeth), not mi lavo le mie mani. The pronoun mi already says whose hands they are.
Two irregular verbs to know: sedersi (to sit down: mi siedo, ti siedi, si siede, ci sediamo) and farsi la doccia (to have a shower), which follows fare (mi faccio, ti fai, si fa).
Reflexive or not?
The same verb can be reflexive or not. It is reflexive when the action comes back to the person doing it; without the pronoun, the action goes to another person or a thing.
Myself / a thing
Mi lavo. · Lavo la macchina.
Myself / another person
Mi sveglio alle sette. · Sveglio i bambini alle sette.
My name / on the phone
Mi chiamo Emma. · Chiamo Emma al telefono.
Each other
Ci vediamo domani! · Marco e Anna si sposano.
How you feel: sentirsi
Come ti senti? Mi sento bene.
Feelings and memory
Mi diverto, mi annoio, mi arrabbio, mi ricordo.
Careful: many verbs are reflexive in Italian but not in English, and you learn them with the pronoun: mi chiamo (my name is), mi diverto (I have fun), mi ricordo (I remember), mi sposo (I get married). In the plural the pronoun can mean “each other”: ci vediamo (see you), si sposano (they marry each other).
Where does the pronoun go?
Usually the pronoun goes right before the verb, also in negative sentences.
With non
Non mi alzo mai prima delle otto.
With dovere, volere, potere: before…
Domani mi devo alzare presto.
…or attached to the infinitive
Domani devo alzarmi presto.
The infinitive changes with the person
Vuoi riposarti un po’?
In the passato prossimo: essere
Stamattina mi sono svegliato tardi. Anna si è svegliata presto.
With the infinitive the pronoun changes with the person: devo alzarmi, devi alzarti, deve alzarsi. Both forms (mi devo alzare / devo alzarmi) are correct.
In the passato prossimo reflexive verbs always take essere, and the participle agrees: mi sono svegliato (Marco), mi sono svegliata (Anna).
