Italian modal verbs: potere, volere and dovere

With these verbs you can talk about possibilities, desires, needs and obligations: I can talk, I want to study, I have to work.

How are they used?

Modal verbs are almost always followed by an infinitive verb.

potere
Posso uscire. = ho la possibilità.

volere
Voglio parlare. = ho un desiderio.

dovere
Devo studiare. = ho un obbligo o una necessità.

modale + infinito
You have to partire, you don't "have to leave".

Short rule: with power, will and duty the second verb remains in the infinitive: speak, see, sleep.

And to the past?

In the present perfect we often use the auxiliary verb in the infinitive.

Voglio comprare un libro.	Ho voluto comprare un libro.

To get started: if the second verb uses to be, you often also use to be with the modal: I had to go, I was able to go out.

Common mistakes

Wrong: io può parlare.Corretto: io posso parlare.

Wrong: lei può venire.Corretto: lei può venire.

Wrong: devo vado.Corretto: devo andare.

Wrong: loro vogliono studiano.Corretto: loro vogliono studiare.
