What do they replace?
Direct pronouns answer the question chi? o che cosa?. They usually come before the conjugated verb.
Compro il pane. Lo compro.
Vedo Maria. La vedo.
Invito gli amici. Li invito.
Leggo le email. Le leggo.

With the present perfect: lo, la, li, make her agree on the participle: I saw Anna -> I saw her.
