Many chores use fare (to do, to make): fare il letto (make the bed), fare il bucato (do the laundry), fare la doccia (have a shower), fare colazione (have breakfast), fare la spesa (do the shopping). Lights and appliances are switched on and off with accendere and spegnere (accendi la luce, spegni la televisione); doors, windows and taps are opened and closed with aprire and chiudere (apri l’acqua, turn on the water). The verbs of the daily routine are reflexive: mi sveglio, mi alzo, mi vesto, and in the passato prossimo they take essere (mi sono alzata alle sette), just like entrare, uscire, salire and scendere (sono uscito alle otto). You say esco di casa (I leave the house) but entro in casa (I go into the house). Verbs for washing, combing your hair and putting on make-up are in the lesson Body verbs; the words for the house are in The house.
