0 to 20

Learn these numbers by heart: all the others are built from them. From 11 to 16 they end in -dici; from 17 to 19 they start with dici-.

NumberIn wordsNumberIn words

1uno12dodici

4quattro15quindici
5cinque16sedici
6sei17diciassette
7sette18diciotto
8otto19diciannove
9nove20venti
10dieci

Watch the double consonants: diciassette has two s, diciotto two t, diciannove two n.

Tens and the numbers from 21 to 99

The tens are venti, trenta, quaranta, cinquanta, sessanta, settanta, ottanta, novanta. For the other numbers, join the ten and the unit into one word: trenta + due = trentadue.

70settantasettantunosettantatrésettantotto
80ottantaottantunoottantatréottantotto
90novantanovantunonovantatrénovantotto

With uno and otto a vowel drops. Before uno and otto the ten loses its final vowel: ventuno, quarantotto, not ventiuno, quarantaotto.

Tre takes an accent. At the end of a longer number it is written tré: ventitré, trentatré, centotré. On its own, tre has no accent.

Hundreds, thousands and millions

Big numbers are also written as one word, from the largest part to the smallest: 245 = duecentoquarantacinque, 1998 = millenovecentonovantotto.

100.000centomila
1.000.000un milione
2.000.000due milioni
1.000.000.000un miliardo

Cento never changes, mille does. Cento stays the same: duecento, trecento. In the plural mille becomes -mila: duemila, tremila, diecimila. Before otto and ottanta, cento usually drops its o: centotto, centottanta.

Milione and miliardo need di. They are nouns: they have a plural (due milioni) and take di before another noun: un milione di persone. Cento and mille do not: mille persone.

A point for thousands, a comma for decimals: the opposite of English. 1.500 is read millecinquecento, 2,5 is read due virgola cinque. Years have no point: 1998.

Ordinal numbers: primo, secondo, terzo

Ordinal numbers give a position in a series: il primo giorno, la seconda strada. Learn the first ten by heart. From 11 onwards, remove the last vowel of the number and add -esimo: undici → undicesimo, venti → ventesimo, cento → centesimo.

They are adjectives. They agree with the noun, just like rosso or piccolo: il terzo piano, la terza volta, i primi giorni, le prime parole.

Two special cases. When the number ends in tre or sei, the vowel stays: ventitreesimo, trentaseiesimo. In writing there is also a short form: 1° (primo), 1ª (prima).

Numbers in everyday life

Age is expressed with avere: ho vent’anni, not sono venti anni.

Uno before a noun changes like the article: un cornetto, una pizza, uno zaino. Euro does not change in the plural (un euro, dieci euro), and with prices people usually leave out centesimi: 3,50 € = tre euro e cinquanta.
