Vocabulary A1–A2
Observe the scene and discover each word through the image and three example Italian sentences.

With ball sports you say giocare a, with no article: gioco a calcio (I play football), a tennis, a pallavolo. With the others you say fare: faccio nuoto (I swim), faccio yoga, fa scherma (she fences); and in general fare sport (to do sport). You go in palestra (to the gym), in piscina (to the pool), but allo stadio (to the stadium). La partita is between two teams or two players (football, tennis); la gara is a competition with many athletes (running, swimming, cycling). You vinci (win), perdi (lose) or pareggi (draw) a match: abbiamo vinto tre a uno (we won three–one). If you watch, you tifi per a team (support it): per che squadra tifi? (which team do you support?). The Italian national team is also called gli Azzurri, from the colour of the shirt. Il pallone is the big football; la palla works for every sport. The gym is in School, the coach in Jobs, the fan and the teammate in The people around us, skis and snowboards in The mountains.
