Vocabulary A1–A2
Observe the scene and discover each word through the image and three example Italian sentences.

With many places Italian uses in without an article: vado in piazza, in banca, in farmacia, in biblioteca, in centro (to the square, the bank, the pharmacy, the library, the centre). With others it uses a plus the article: al cinema, al bar, al mercato, al parco, alla stazione, all’ospedale. And you say a scuola, a teatro, a casa. Transport takes in: in autobus (by bus), in macchina, in bici, in treno; but on foot is a piedi. You “take” buses, trains and taxis: prendo la metropolitana. Careful: la libreria is a bookshop (or a bookcase), not a library; a library is la biblioteca. An Italian bar is mainly a café, for coffee and breakfast.
