The three main types

Type	Structure	Example
Real	se + presente, presente/futuro	Se studi, migliori.
Possible	se + congiuntivo imperfetto, condizionale presente	Se studiassi di più, parleresti meglio.
Unreal in the past	se + congiuntivo trapassato, condizionale passato	Se avessi studiato, avresti superato l'esame.

We use the imperfect subjunctive afterwards se and the conditional present in the consequence.

Se avessi tempo, leggerei di più.

Se fossi in Italia, parlerei italiano ogni giorno.

Se potessi, farei una lezione con Martin.

Se studiassimo insieme, sarebbe più facile.

When we talk about something that didn't happen, we use the past subjunctive and the past conditional.

Se avessi saputo la risposta, l'avrei detta.

Se fossi partito...
Se fossi partito prima, sarei arrivato in tempo.

With avere
I would have eaten, you would have seen.

With essere
I would have gone, you would have arrived.
