How do they work?

The possessive changes based on the thing owned, not the person who owns it. We usually also use the article.

Masculine singular
il mio libro

Feminine singular
la mia casa

Attention: with family members in the singular we often leave out the article: mia madre, tuo padre, suo fratello.

Adjective or pronoun?

When it accompanies a noun it is an adjective. When it replaces a noun it is a pronoun.

Questo è il mio libro.

Questo libro è il mio.

Wrong: il loro macchina Correct: la loro macchina.

Wrong: il mio madre Correct: mia madre.
