Il gatto nero, le rane verdi, i fenicotteri rosa

Colours agree with the word they describe: il gatto nero, la gatta nera, i gatti neri, le gatte nere. Colours ending in -e have two forms: la rana verde, le rane verdi; l’orso marrone, gli orsi marroni; le zucche arancioni. Blu, rosa and viola never change: le farfalle blu, i fenicotteri rosa. With chiaro (light) and scuro (dark) the colour stays the same: una maglietta verde chiaro, le scarpe blu scuro. Azzurro is the light blue of the sky: for Italians it is a different colour from blu. Some idioms: diventare rosso come un peperone (to go red with embarrassment), essere al verde (to be broke), vedere tutto rosa (to see everything through rose-tinted glasses), avere una fifa blu (to be scared stiff); and un giallo is a crime novel.

Drag-and-drop exercise

Describe the animal: what colour is it? What is it like?

Drag a word that describes the photo onto it: a colour, a pattern or a shape. Often more than one fits (the tiger is arancione, nera and a righe): one is enough, but you can add as many as you like. On a phone: tap the word, then tap the photo.
